Muscle & Joint Health

Few conditions attract the misuse of muscle relaxant and pain medications more than muscle and joint issues. It is estimated today that there are more than 4.7 million Americans dependent on prescription painkillers, which represents up to 2% of the US adult population overall, and this number continues to grow every year. Narcotic pain medications such as Vicodin, Oxycontin, Norco, and Hydrocodone are commonly prescribed by physicians to treat muscle and joint pain with little regard for conservative measures of treatment. Often, patients continue taking their medications as prescribed and become physically dependent.

Muscle pain (myalgia) is a common complaint and is most frequently related to obvious overuse or muscle injury from trauma, unaccustomed exercise, or vigorous work. However, muscle pain can accompany many other conditions such as arthralgia (joint pain), infectious disease, bursitis, and autoimmune disease.

Joint pain (arthralgia) can be caused by injury or disease of the joint or adjacent tissues. Ligaments attach bone to bone around the joint, and tendons attach muscle to bone. Bursae, the fluid-filled sacs that provide a gliding surface for adjacent tendons, can easily become inflamed. Injury or disease to any of these joint structures can lead to varied levels and qualities of pain.

Corticosteroids, such as prednisone and cortisone, are used to reduce inflammation, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are a multi-billion dollar industry. Immune-suppressing medications are used for rheumatoid arthritis, and other assorted medications for psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

Overall, little consideration is given to the following facts:

  • 1 in 2 Americans report muscle discomfort or motion limitations in the neck, back, or joints.
  • 9 out of 10 women in the U.S. may not be getting enough calcium.
  • Almost 3 out of 4 U.S. adolescents and adults have insufficient levels of vitamin D.
  • Almost 7 in 10 Americans may be consuming inadequate amounts of magnesium.

How We Can Help

Muscle and joint maintenance rely heavily on key vitamins and minerals such as calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium that may be missing in adequate amounts in many modern diets.

Joint health can benefit greatly from omega-3s and other nutrients that support cartilage integrity. Protein, minerals, and vitamins positively influence connective tissue growth, contraction, and relaxation and also promote exercise recovery. Specific nutritional protocols combined with wise dietary choices can easily maintain long-term muscle and joint health.

Chiropractors are health care specialists who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. At Divine Design, we can evaluate, address, and adjust practically every joint in the body, including the spine and the upper and lower extremities. Chiropractic adjustments decrease pain, fibrous adhesions, and inflammation while increasing joint mobility. The conservative side of chiropractic care should always be considered before medications and surgery are enlisted at a much greater cost to your physical and financial well-being.
